This course provides an introduction to personal health, acquainting students with the understanding that the decisions they make affect the health of self, families, friends, and communities. An emphasis will be placed on health trends and health behaviors. This course is designed to introduce students to the general concepts of personal and family health, fitness, and wellness. Through readings, lectures, discussions, class participation, exams, assignments and projects, students will be introduced to the basic concepts of physical fitness and nutrition, as well as to traditional health education topics (i.e., substance abuse; family life education; mental/emotional health; sexuality education and family planning), with practical application geared to individual needs. Current health issues, including those relating to individual health behavior and behavior change, will be addressed in the context of enhancing personal health and preventing disease as related to health indicators identified in Healthy People 2020: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.
