This course offers the study and practice of play analysis with an emphasis on exploring the potential for live performance, embedded in a written script. In this course we will approach the study of the play text with emphasis on Formalist/Aristotelian Analysis and Freytag's Analytical Model. Students will learn to employ a three-tiered approach to analyzing plays: textual/structural, dramaturgical/contextual, and creative/intuitive. The intent is for the student to develop a formal approach to exploring a play script from the point of view of the actor, director, designer, dramaturge, and audience. An introduction to theatre research methods.
