This course provides an introduction to research-based teaching strategies and principles of curriculum development, pedagogical theory, and teaching of variety of individual, dual and team sports, individual-performance activities, and fitness activities to middle and high school students as guided by Iowa Department of Education’s PE Standards and Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for Middle School and High School Physical Education. A variety of instructional/teaching models such as personalized system for instruction, inquiry teaching, sport education, cooperative learning, and peer teaching will also be covered. Students are expected to concurrently apply developmentally appropriate practices by planning, teaching, and assessing middle and high school students. The course includes at least 15 hours of observation and practicum in a grades middle school and/or high school setting. In cases where it is logistically impossible for practicum placements, peer-clinicals will be used for experiential learning.
