The purpose of INT320 Integrating the Arts is to integrate the arts with various instructional methods providing learners multiple paths to making sense of and connecting to the world around them. Current best practice methodology for pre-service elementary education majors engages K-8 students by integrating creative arts-based instruction as well as the essential elements of school health and physical education throughout core subjects. This course emphasizes:

  • Planning and preparation for incorporating music, movement, health/wellness, theater, poetry and visual arts while addressing state standards. 

  • Understanding of the nature of an interdisciplinary approach will provide the pre-service teacher with strategies to increase student engagement, to meet State of Iowa academic standards and to promote critical thinking skills in and out of school. After learning his course also requires the development of a classroom management plan including ideas that consider the impacts of class environment and class culture, as well as lesson plan(s) that incorporate children’s literature addressing holistic well-being expectations.

  • Developing a classroom management plan and text-set that involves children’s literature that addresses behavior expectations

  • Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of multiple factors that contribute to the creation of a positive learning environment (SigAsess#3)
