Using an index trades away storage space for faster queries. It establishes shortcuts for queries to follow, because various pieces of data are given tags that can be observed more efficiently than checking the piece of data itself. Think of trying to search for something in a bile of boxes. Now, the boxes are labeled, and while you must look at the label of every box, you don't have to look at every item in each box, just the box with the label you're looking for.
