Why are bats so easily blamed for arises viruses and illnesses? Why is it so easy to blame an animal when the virus could of originated from something else?

I don't know, human nature?  Bats are the only flying mammal; they come at night; they scare us; they can harbor the rabies virus which used to be considered 100% fatal;horror books have been written about them (Bram Stoker's Dracula!).  Once an idea gets into the human consciousness, it is hard to dispell.
