I'm a type 1 diabetic, so I'm interested in what makes the comorbidity for diabetes so high. Do we know? my thought right now is that because t1d is caused by the immune system killing off the beta cells, could the comorbidity be explained by the body's seeming propensity for immune overreaction, thus making it more likely to create a cytokine storm when SARS- CoV- 2 is detected?

Not really.  You are no more prone to a cytokine storm than anyone else.  The comorbidity that we are seeing with COVID-19 is due more to type II diabetics who are more common in the population than type I.
